Fees and Payments //
Although the practice of medicine contains many of the elements of a business nature, it is in fact primarily a humanitarian gesture. The past several years has seen the cost of most things rise dramatically, with health care being no exception to this trend. Sadly today's fees, which are generally set by the insurance carriers are considerably higher than they were in the past and now require a variety of co-payments.
The fees charged by this office are comparable to those charged by other private practice rheumatologists but less than those charged by hospital based rheumatology practices. If there are any financial problems we will be happy to make special arrangements for payment on a scheduled basis.
The payment of fees is the direct responsibility of the patient. Payment for services is required at the time of the office visit. This includes co-pays or if we do not participate with your insurance, payment in full.
For insurances we do not participate with, payment is required on the day of the service and we will provide the patient with a copy of the charges for that day to submit to their insurance carrier.
Our Norwich office accepts cash or check only for payment of services. Our East Lyme office (only) can also accept credit card payment with VISA and Mastercard. There will be a $10 charge for all non-payment of services on the day they are rendered to cover the costs of billing.
Appointments can only be made by calling the East Lyme office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Urgent or acute rheumatologic problems take priority in scheduling, especially for established patients. NEW PATIENTS ARE SEEN BY REFERRAL.
If you cannot keep an appointment, please give the office 24 HOURS NOTICE OR EARLIER. Appointments will be confirmed by telephone the day before the patient's visit. We will endeavor to contact patients to reschedule in the event of extreme weather events.
IF YOU FAIL TO SHOW UP FOR A CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT, YOU WILL INCUR A $100 "NO SHOW" FEE FOR A NEW PATIENT APPOINTMENT, AND A $45 FEE FOR A FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT
Frequently Asked Questions //

Between vists you may wish to call regarding special problems. As a matter of fact we encourage patients to telephone us if there are any questions or problems. whenever possible, however, please call during office hours. Your message will be relayed to Dr. Levin and he will return your call as soon as he is free or call you after office hours that day. If you find it necessary to contact the doctor after normal office hours or on weekends all will be received by our answering service which will follow with a message to the doctor. He will return your call at the earliest opportunity
Although he is usually available during non-office hours and weekends, from time to time, Dr. Levin will be away on vacation or attending medical education meetings. When he is away you will need to contact your primary care/internist if a problem arises. If necessary, you may need to be seen at your local emergency room. Medications may need temporary refills from your physician or pharmacist. The length of absence or practice coverage arrangements can be checked with our answering service. There is frequently a physician covering for Dr. Levin for urgent matters in his absence.,
Prescriptions are written on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday only. Please give the office at least 3 days notice when needing a refill on your medication. Controlled substances, like narcotic analgesics, will not be refilled on a weekend or from the Norwich office on a Tuesday.
Because of new guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) starting at the end of 2014, we are requiring all patients for whom narcotic analgesics are prescribed by this office to sign a contract regarding their use of these medications and to prevent misuse or overuse. Prescriptions for narcotic analgesics cannot be dated ahead of time. Please make note of when your prescription will run out and call the office accordingly. If you call after hours, we will not authorize refills except for emergencies.
Most prescription refills of non-narcotic medications are being done electronically, but you will need to check with your pharmacy with regards to the number of refills that are available.
A patient will be called for abnormal results only. Please do not call us for results unless specifically told to do so. "No news is good news".
